Each year we are witness to a flu epidemic or flu pandemic, influenza such as avian flu and swine flu have us rushing to the doctors at any signs of flu symptoms. Healthwise Global offer an alternative method for the prevention of flu type viruses.

Avian Flu Pandemic

Official Statistics and Data from cabinet Office, ODPM (Office of the Deputy Prime Minister) and London Resilience Team

WHEN the Avian flu pandemic reaches the UK (and we told that it is a matter of when not if), we are told that:-

  • The outbreak is expected to last about 2.5 months, affecting 10% of the population at any one time and 25% of the population over the period of the pandemic, with a 2.5% mortality rate.
  • There is a new flu that no one has had exposure to (no one alive that is); therefore there is no immunity.
  • Anti-viral treatments will not prevent the spread of infection, but will be used in treating the infection.
  • It is anticipated that there will be a secondary outbreak some 2-3 months after the initial outbreak.

Nationally

  • There will be between 21,500 and 709,300 expected deaths across UK (excess deaths = above and beyond what is anticipated as a normal expected rate of mortality. E.g. in London there is an average of 12,000 expected deaths per week.)

London

  • The pandemic will infect 1,400,000 to 2,100,000 persons in London alone.
  • There will be between 5,00 and 8,000 excess deaths in London.

Absenteeism

Absenteeism through infection will be around 10% per capital, with the illness lasting 5 to 8 days. There will also be collateral indirect impact caused by:-

  • 1. Fear of contracting the infection
  • 2. Caring for an infected family member
  • 3. Bereavement
  • 4. Transport disruption
  • 5. Closure of schools causing a parent to stay at home
  • 6. Persons who may choose to abuse the situation

Prevention

  • There is no vaccine for this virus it will take 4 to 6 months after the start of the pandemic to produce and roll a vaccine.
  • Personal hygiene is a prime in the reduction of the spread of the infection
