Understanding Stress - There are many definitions of stress. It is defined in the Oxford Dictionary as being "a state of affair involving demand on physical or mental energy". Nature has equipped all animals with the ability to respond to a stressful situation instantly. Under stress, we get a surge of adrenaline which is the stress hormone that gives us a rush of energy giving you extra strength and endurance to help us deal with whatever emergency we are faced with. This is known as "fight or flight." The immediate bodily reactions are a release of adrenaline, cortisol, thyroxin, testosterone and other hormones, rise in blood pressure and direct blood flow to the extremities for physical peak performance. The rush of energy was essential for our survival tens of thousands of years ago when we constantly had the threat of dangerous animals such as wolves and saber-toothed tigers.

The body responds in physical ways.

  • Rapid breathing which is needed to take in more oxygen in escaping from the attacker and brings more oxygen
  • to your muscles
  • Pounding heart, dry mouth and the urge to urinate which makes the body lighter to allow a faster escape
  • Digestion stops as that it doesn't use up energy that is needed in other areas of the body
  • Muscles and blood flow to you brain increase around 400%

These physical effects are our bodies automatically preparing us to deal with and face whatever external situation that may be dangerous for us. A stressful situation has been known to give a person extraordinary strength, or "super human" strength for example, people being able to lift a car off of a loved one. There are many stories of people doing the seemingly impossible feats under extreme duress.

The stress is causing the body to prepare for physical action and the stress hormones are constantly pumping around your body.
