Unpleasant events are a large cause of stress such as losing a job or having problems at home. However, events that are joyful, such as pregnancy and giving birth cause stress as well, so stress doesn't merely occur in bad or dangerous situations. For example, a ride on a rollercoaster causes the body to go into a stressed out state, even if you are enjoying the ride.
Stressful Life Events
In 1967 two American psychiatrists, Holmes and Rahe, developed the Holmes-Rahe scale which is a list of life events which they identified as being stressful. They examined the medical records of over 5,000 medical patients to determine whether stressful events caused illnesses and they devised the following scale which works on the basis of the higher the number, the greater the stress.
Even though stress can be caused by events, it is actually our reactions to the events that cause stress symptoms, not the events themselves. It is all in the mind.
